Dan Oved's Creative Projects

  • Apotheneum: Treetop Transmissions

Field recordings from the Congo Basin and Amazon capture rainforests as they sound now — ecosystems being reshaped by climate change and human activity. With no visual reference, generative algorithms interpret the sounds into light inside the Apotheneum, a building-scale multi-sensory instrument with 13,280 LED nodes and a haptic bed. Deployed at Burning Man 2025 and Art Basel Miami 2025.

  • PoseNet in Tensorflow.js

PoseNet is a machine learning model for real-time human pose estimation in the browser. I collaborated with the Google Creative Lab to open-source an accessible TensorFlow.js version — because pose estimation should not require a powerful GPU or a computer science degree to use.

  • The Self-Driving Human

What happens when we cede our everyday decisions to a machine? The Self-Driving Human is a wearable device and performance where a portable intelligent agent makes real-world decisions for its human participants. Built as my masters thesis at ITP.

  • w@y_p01nt

What if virtual worlds could be truly owned and connected by the communities that build them? w@y_p01nt is an open-source protocol that lets 3D artists and communities create decentralized networks of interoperable virtual worlds. Selected as a finalist at EthGlobal HackFS.

  • NIME: The Liquisynth

The Liquisynth is a musical instrument and live performance that modulates sounds in response to the characteristics of liquids as they mix, as a combination of randomness and control.

  • Spatial Sound and Light Stream

Spatial Sound and Light Stream is a performance that combines multi-channel sound and 3D visual elements in a live stream. The sound is linked to balls of light that move around in real-time, controlled by the performer and modulated by the sound. This creates an immersive, visual, and binaural listening experience. I performed it in a virtual environment called Yorb as part of the ITP residents show.

  • H3LIX - Visual Massage

What happens when acquiring art changes the space it lives in? H3LIX - Visual Massage is a virtual exhibit of 300 handmade GIF art pieces mintable on Ethereum via a custom ERC721 contract. As pieces are collected, the exhibit itself transforms — door frames illuminate and windows appear on the outside of the room.

  • Presence

What does it mean for a sculpture to see you? Presence is a kinetic sculpture that uses PoseNet-powered pose estimation to perceive and mimic the viewer's form in real time. Shown at the 2018 Makerfaire.

  • The Pursuit by Equinox

The Pursuit by Equinox is a gamified group cycling class driven by 500,000 records of data per session to display a Canne’s Lion winning visual experience. 700+ classes are hosted per month at Equinox locations across the United States. I was the lead developer on this project.

  • Arium

Flat video calls strip away the serendipity of being in a room together — spatial presence changes how people connect. Arium is a browser-based platform I co-founded where artists and creators build 3D virtual worlds with real-time spatial video and audio chat.

  • BodyPix in Tensorflow.js

BodyPix is an open-source machine learning model for person and body-part segmentation. In collaboration with researchers at Google, I open-sourced a TensorFlow.js version so that body segmentation could run entirely in the browser — keeping user data on-device and making the technology accessible to any web developer.

  • Infinity Zoetrope

The Infinity Zoetrope bridges analog and digital: a camera captures a rotating physical disk at a precise frame rate, creating an infinite loop that appears to extend into another dimension through color and transformation. Shown at the Museum of the Moving Image for a class taught by Shantell Martin.

  • Voronoi Cellular Zoetrope

A physical animation generated by graphics shaders that loops seamlessly and infinitely
